The book isn’t perfect (there’s some instalove in the mix and a rather cliché moment), but I’ll read book two for sure!Īuthor wordswithdestiny Posted on FebruFebruCategories Book Review Tags black fiction, book blogging, Book Review, diverse fiction, diverse reads, J.

The chapters passed by quickly and kept my interest. She’s not just this magical brick wall of a girl who pushes everything down inside she had vulnerability too. Collard greens and neckbones and thick, lemony slices of pound cake? Yum!Īlso, I enjoyed Rue’s narrative. This is a thoroughly engaging story and a compelling resolution to Rue’s journey.

Danger lurks around every corner, and Rue has to overcome multiple obstacles in her journey. What a ride! Make this a movie (either animated or live action is fine)! I loved the strong sense of community Rue’s (neighbor)hood had and all the soul food references. Ashes of Gold burns through the pages with a relentless storyline that doesn’t give readers time to breathe.
